THE DILEMMA OF RISPER

The Dilemma of Risper

Risper sat on the edge of her neatly made bed, staring at the text on her phone. It was from Simon, her boyfriend.

"Good morning, my love. I hope you slept well. I miss you already."

She smiled. Simon was everything she could want in a man—kind, gentle, and God-fearing. He loved her in a way that made her feel seen and cherished. Yet, as much as her heart belonged to him, there was another side of her life that Simon didn’t know about.

Her phone buzzed again. This time, it was from Daniel, the “mzungu” who had unexpectedly walked into her life a year ago.

"I’ve sent the money. Enjoy your day, Risper."

Risper’s heart thudded as she read the message. She had met Daniel at a high-end café in Nairobi when she was out with friends. His charm, his wealth, and his willingness to support her financially had drawn her in like a moth to a flame. He wasn’t her boyfriend, at least not officially, but the way he treated her made her feel like she mattered in his world of luxury.

With Daniel’s help, Risper lived a life she could only dream of. Weekly trips to the salon, the latest handbags, fancy shoes, and an apartment that outshone anything her own income could afford.

Simon, on the other hand, was different. He worked hard as a primary school teacher, earning a modest salary that barely covered his own needs. He didn’t spoil her with gifts or take her to expensive restaurants, but he gave her something money couldn’t buy—his heart.

But Simon wasn’t blind.

“Babe,” he had asked one evening as they walked through a local park, “how do you manage all these things? The shopping, the trips, the way you look… I know you don’t earn that much. Did you get a promotion you didn’t tell me about?”

Risper had laughed it off, but Simon’s eyes had lingered on hers, searching for something she wasn’t ready to give—an explanation.

Now, as she sat on her bed, her mind raced. Should she tell Simon about Daniel? Could she even explain it? And what about Daniel? How would he react if he found out about Simon?

Daniel wasn’t just a source of financial support; he had feelings for her too. Though he never explicitly said it, his actions spoke volumes. He cared. He wanted her to live comfortably, to succeed. And she was pleased by him. But did she love him?

Simon, on the other hand, was struggling to make ends meet but still made time for her. He’d bring her small gifts—a book, a flower, her favorite snack—and it was clear that his love for her was genuine and unwavering.

But could love alone sustain her?

The weight of her double life pressed down on her like a stone.

One Saturday evening, Simon invited her over for dinner. He had prepared her favorite meal—chapati and beef stew. As they ate, Simon brought up the topic again.

“Risper,” he said, his voice steady but his eyes betraying his concern, “I love you. But I need to understand something. How are you managing all these things? Your lifestyle—it’s… it’s so far above what you and I can afford.”

Risper felt her stomach twist. She opened her mouth to speak but no words came out. How could she tell him about Daniel without breaking his heart?

The following week, Daniel invited her to an exclusive gala. The dress he had sent her was breathtaking—emerald green silk that clung to her figure like it was made just for her. As she twirled in front of the mirror, her mind wandered to Simon. He didn’t know about this side of her life. He didn’t know about Daniel.

At the gala, Daniel leaned in close and whispered, “You deserve this life, Risper. You’re too special to settle for less.”

The words echoed in her mind long after the event ended. Was he right? Was she settling with Simon? Or was she losing herself by staying entangled with Daniel?

Days turned into weeks, and Risper’s dilemma grew heavier. Every time she looked at Simon’s hopeful face or read Daniel’s generous messages, she felt torn in two.

One evening, as Simon dropped her off at her apartment, he held her hand a little longer than usual.

“Risper,” he said softly, “I feel like there’s something you’re not telling me. Whatever it is, I’m here. But please, don’t shut me out.”

Tears welled up in her eyes as she watched him drive away. She wanted to tell him. She wanted to tell both of them. But how?

Would Simon understand? Would Daniel walk away? And what would she be left with if both men decided they couldn’t stay in her complicated world?

Risper stood at her window, staring at the city lights. Her heart ached with the weight of her choices. She was stuck between two worlds, two men, two versions of herself.

And she had no idea which one to choose.

What do you think? Does Risper’s dilemma feel alive and real enough?
