THE UNSEEN BOND

  The Unseen Bond

Peris sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her phone, her fingers hovering over the screen. The name "Daniel" flashed at the top of their chat. It had been months since he first called her by mistake, and from that moment, their conversations had never stopped.

She still remembered that evening vividly. She had been nursing a broken heart, her mind clouded by the betrayal of a past love. It was then that her phone rang, displaying an unknown number. She hesitated before answering.

"Hello?" she had said cautiously.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I think I dialed the wrong number," the deep, warm voice had responded.

"It's okay. Who were you trying to call?" she had asked, curiosity piqued.

That accidental call turned into a conversation that stretched for hours. Daniel was kind, understanding, and, most importantly, he listened. He didn’t rush her to heal, nor did he pretend to fix her pain. Instead, he encouraged her, spoke words of wisdom, and walked with her through her healing journey. Though they had never met in person, Peris felt as if she knew him more than anyone she had encountered before.

But not everyone in her life was happy about her newfound connection. She lived with two friends, Brenda and Lisa, who seemed supportive at first. However, she began to notice subtle changes in their behavior whenever she talked about Simon. They would exchange glances, roll their eyes, or change the subject abruptly.

One evening, as she excitedly shared how Daniel had encouraged her through a tough day, Brenda scoffed. "You’re really invested in someone you’ve never even met? What if he’s just saying all these things to manipulate you?"

Lisa nodded in agreement. "Yeah, Peris. You’ve been through enough. Maybe you should be careful."

Peris frowned. She understood their concerns, but deep down, she knew Simon was different. Unlike her past relationship, there was no deception, no false promises—only honest conversations and shared dreams.

One night, as she lay in bed, Simon texted her:

Daniel: Do you ever wonder what it would be like if we finally met?

Peris: Every day. But I also wonder… what if meeting changes everything?

Daniel: What if it doesn’t? What if it only makes everything stronger?

She sighed, staring at the ceiling. He was right. Their connection had already defied the odds.

Days turned into weeks, and the jealousy of her friends became more evident. They would mock her behind her back, sometimes even deleting his messages before she could read them. One day, Brenda took it too far.

"If he really cared about you, he’d come see you already," she taunted. "Maybe he’s not who he says he is."

That night, Peris called Daniel, frustration in her voice. "Daniel, why haven’t we met yet? I need to know if this is real."

There was a pause on the other end before he spoke softly. "Peris, I want nothing more than to see you, but I want it to be the right time. I want to make sure when we finally meet, there’s nothing standing in the way of what we could be."

Her heart pounded. "And when will that be?"

He chuckled. "Soon. And when we do, I promise, it will be worth the wait."

Peris smiled, gripping her phone tighter. Though doubt had been planted by those around her, she knew in her heart that Daniel was genuine. But one question lingered in her mind, making her pulse quicken:

What would happen when they finally met?
